German municipalities flood preparedness

Two days later, other German authorities announced complementary actions. In North Rhine‑Westphalia, the Märkischer Kreis launched an inter‑municipal early‑warning system that combines sensor data on water levels and soil moisture with forecasts from the German Weather Service and an AI model capable of predicting flood waves up to an hour in advance. Meanwhile, the Baden‑Württemberg municipality of Schenkenzell began drafting a storm‑rain risk‑management plan, drawing on past flood events and seeking input from residents. Both projects reflect a broader push by German local governments to strengthen preparedness for increasingly frequent and intense heavy‑rain events.
