The German Bundestag’s Budget Committee has approved the procurement of four additional MEKO A-200 DEU frigates from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). This decision expands an existing anti-submarine warfare program from four to eight vessels, with the second batch of four ships valued at approximately 5.3 billion euros. The total contract for all eight units is estimated at roughly 11.6 billion euros. This program aims to address capability gaps in the German Navy and fulfill NATO obligations to provide four continuous anti-submarine warfare frigates starting in 2028. The vessels are intended for deployment in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Atlantic, and the High North. The first delivery is expected by the end of 2029. The shift to the MEKO A-200 class follows the cancellation of the F126 frigate program due to performance issues and delays involving the Dutch contractor Damen Naval. While TKMS described the contract as the “largest surface order in its history,” the company’s stock initially declined by 11 percent over a 30-day period as investors remained cautious regarding project timelines and margins. The procurement process also faces scrutiny following However, shares have recently seen gains of between 2.9 and 3.5 percent, driven by a formal complaint from Damen. broader recovery in the European defense sector. Market focus has since shifted toward industrial execution and whether TKMS can manage its massive order backlog and production schedules without operational bottlenecks.
