Journalist Franz Alt proposed that Berlin host a solar-powered Olympic Games in 2036 or later, suggesting the event serve as a symbolic gesture to mark the centenary of the 1936 Nazi-hosted Olympics. Alt cited the Paris 2024 Olympics as an inspiration for using renewable energy and promoting peace. Following the withdrawal of the Berlin and Hamburg bids, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) officially selected Munich as the national candidate to bid for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. Munich secured the nomination with a 91 to 50 vote in Baden-Baden, defeating the Cologne-Rhein-Ruhr regional bid, which had already incurred approximately 15 million euros in costs. The Munich proposal emphasizes a compact and efficient Games by utilizing existing infrastructure, primarily around the Olympic Park in Bavaria, with football matches planned for Stuttgart and sailing events in Kiel. While the selection received support from regional sports clubs, some officials have called for better coordination with surrounding districts to manage traffic and infrastructure. German leadership, including President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have expressed support for the bid. Steinmeier described the selection as a “huge opportunity for the whole of Germany.” Despite this support, the selection has prompted calls for caution regarding costs and infrastructure. Critics and politicians have emphasized the need for binding cost caps and a fair distribution of expenses between federal, state, and municipal governments to prevent the bid from becoming a financial burden. Significant challenges remain, including the development of an Olympic Village and the expansion of public transport. The next major milestone is the International Olympic Committee (IOC) pre-selection process, which is expected to conclude in March 2027, with a final decision anticipated in 2029.
