Germany has officially selected Munich as its national candidate to bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the years 2036, 2040, or 2044. The decision was reached during an extraordinary general meeting of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) in Baden-Baden. In a secret ballot, Munich secured 91 votes, defeating the Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr regional bid, which received 50 votes. The decision was reached in the first round of voting among 141 total votes cast by representatives of 42 sports associations, the DOSB presidency, and personal members. Both proposals had been classified as ‘very good’ by the DOSB evaluation commission, with Munich receiving 87.03 points compared to 85.02 for Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr. The final decision was announced by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and DOSB President Thomas Weikert. The selection process followed the withdrawal of Berlin’s ‘Berlin+’ concept due to political instability and Hamburg’s failed public referendum. Munich’s successful bid focuses on compactness and the utilization of existing infrastructure, leveraging its legacy from the 1972 Summer Games. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder and Munich Mayor Dominik Krause have expressed enthusiasm for the decision, viewing it as a historic opportunity for Germany. President Steinmeier described the candidacy as a “huge opportunity for all of Germany.” To manage the upcoming international campaign, the DOSB, the state of Bavaria, and involved municipalities will establish a dedicated bidding company. Munich will now advance to the international bidding stage through the International Olympic Committee (IOC), competing against potential candidates from India, Qatar, South Korea, Turkey, and South Africa. A final host selection by the IOC is expected in 2029.
