German political debate over Ukraine war support

Diplomatic and internal political tensions have emerged in Germany regarding the country's stance on the war in Ukraine. Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, publicly criticized politicians from the AfD and BSW parties, accusing them of using pro-Russian rhetoric and calling for peace negotiations that may relativize war crimes. Makeiev argued that military support is vital to protecting civilians and preventing the conflict from reaching NATO borders.

Within the AfD, internal disagreements regarding the nature of the conflict have surfaced. Rüdiger Lucassen, a former defense policy spokesperson for the party's Bundestag faction, publicly distanced himself from certain party positions. While acknowledging past affinities for Russia among party members, Lucassen stated, “But one thing is a fact: The Russian Federation and Putin have invaded Ukraine and have started a war of aggression.” He highlighted a discrepancy between the federal parliamentary group, which recognizes the invasion as a war of aggression, and state-level branches that describe the situation merely as a “conflict in Ukraine.”
