German rail operators have announced significant timetable changes and service adjustments scheduled for late 2026. 2026 and 2027. In the Berlin and Brandenburg region, the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) is implementing changes for the December timetable, including increased frequency on regional lines such as the RE3, RE4, and RE5, and increased capacity on the RE1 line. On a broader scale, Deutsche Bahn has unveiled its 2027 long-distance timetable, effective December 13, 2026. The expansion focuses on high-speed Sprinter services and increased international connectivity, with plans for over 320 daily international trips. Key updates include a new ICE Sprinter service between Hamburg and Munich, reducing travel time to 5 hours and 20 minutes, and increasing Sprinter services between Berlin and Stuttgart from once to three times daily. International improvements include new direct connections to Belgium and expanded services to France, Italy, and Austria. Specifically, new direct ICE connections will link Halle (Saale), Erfurt, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, and Freiburg to Swiss destinations including Zurich, Chur, and Interlaken. Cooperation with Trenitalia and ÖBB is also expected to launch direct Frecciarossa services from Munich to Milan and Rome via Innsbruck in summer 2027. Additionally, direct ICE services from Amsterdam to Munich are set to increase from one to six daily during the summer of 2027, while cooperation with SNCF will enhance links between Paris and cities like Stuttgart and Munich. To support commuters and families, Deutsche Bahn is introducing a permanent family ticket for up to five people to travel round-trip in second class within Germany for 99.99 euros, including seat reservations. Additionally, monthly Monthly passes and student monthly passes for long-distance travel will also become 25 percent cheaper for those without a subscription. These expansions coincide with significant infrastructure challenges. Extensive construction work, delayed electrification, and route closures are anticipated on the Cologne-to-Rhein/Main high-speed line, the Hamburg-Berlin route, and the Lehrte-to-Berlin corridor. Notably, a complete closure of the 230-kilometer section between Lehrte and Berlin is expected through 2027, and a five-month closure of the Rosenheim-Salzburg route is planned for early 2027.
