German SME economic and investment decline

Overview

German small and medium-sized enterprises (Mittelstand) are facing significant economic challenges characterized by declining investment and political dissatisfaction. A BVMW survey indicates that 44.84% of entrepreneurs rate the federal government’s performance as ‘insufficient’, while 67.40% anticipate an economic downturn in the coming year. Investment intentions have reached a 20-year low, with only 37.3% of companies planning new investments.

Further analysis by KfW shows that 33% of companies reported postponing or reducing the scale of investments planned for 2026, a record high. Real investment volume has declined for three consecutive years when adjusted for inflation. Businesses cite high costs for energy, materials, and wages, as well as bureaucracy and general economic uncertainty, as primary obstacles to growth.
