German state election political shifts

In late August 2026, political attention in Germany focused on upcoming elections in Berlin and Sachsen-Anhalt. In Sachsen-Anhalt, media outlets like ZDF described the election as a potential ‘historical turning point’ (historische Zäsur), noting the possibility of the AfD providing its first Minister-President.

Following the election in Sachsen-Anhalt, political deadlock emerged as the AfD became the election winner but faced resistance from other parties. To address this, the BSW proposed the possibility of an independent Minister President. While the BSW expressed willingness to cooperate with the AfD on certain parliamentary roles, they have not committed to supporting an AfD candidate for the leadership.

Concurrently, discussions arose regarding the state’s scheduled chairmanship of the Ministerpräsidentenkonferenz (MPK) in October. Following a suggestion by outgoing Minister President Sven Schulze to forgo the position, legal experts, including Peter M. Huber, noted that changing the rotation of the chairmanship is legally permissible because the MPK is an informal coordinating body rather than a formal constitutional organ.
