German talk show summer hiatus 2026

Overview

In July 2026, Germany’s major public-service talk programmes entered a coordinated summer break. ARD’s political discussion show “Hart aber Fair” skipped its regular edition on 20 July, substituting a 2024 comedy film and a recording of the “Concert de Paris 2026”. Other flagship shows, including Caren Miosga’s ARD programme, ZDF’s “Markus Lanz”, Maybrit Illner, and Sandra Maischberger, also paused for several weeks.

On 2 August, ARD and ZDF announced specific return dates. “Markus Lanz” resumed on 11 August, while “Hart aber fair” remained off the air until 31 August. Maybrit Illner’s programme continued with Sarah Tacke as a stand-in until 3 September, and Sandra Maischberger’s show returned in August. Following its return, ZDF announced a special edition of “Markus Lanz” for 7 September, scheduled for the day after the state election in Saxony-Anhalt.

As the hiatus concluded, programming focused on regional and federal politics. On 26 August, “Markus Lanz” addressed the SPD’s challenges regarding declining approval ratings, voter shifts toward the AfD, and reform disputes within the black-red coalition. Guests included SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch, journalist Dagmar Rosenfeld, and Olaf Sundermeyer, with discussions also covering the ‘Bürgergeld’ social welfare system. On 27 August, the program shifted focus to the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), examining the party’s internal power struggles, its relationship with the AfD, and its potential for governing. Guests included Thuringia Finance Minister Katja Wolf and journalist Anne Hähnig.
