In late September 2026, initiatives were announced to improve road safety in Germany through vehicle lighting inspections as daylight hours decrease. Nationwide, the German Motor Vehicle Trade (ZDK), the Federal Association of the Automotive Craft (BIV-Kfz), and the German Traffic Watch (DVW) organized the 70th annual ‘Licht-Sicht-Test’ (Light-Sight-Test). Starting October 1, participating workshops offer free inspections of headlights and alignment, with the option to check windshields, wipers, and tires. To mark the 70th anniversary, the scope of the service has been expanded to include these additional checks. Organizers expect approximately four million vehicle checks during the month of October. Previous data indicated that approximately 27.8 percent of inspected vehicles required attention. attention, a figure that rose from 25.3 percent in 2024. Vehicles that pass the test may receive a visibility badge, though costs apply if replacement parts or extensive repairs are necessary. In Bavaria, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann complemented these efforts by announcing a statewide police campaign to inspect vehicle lighting. This measure responds to safety risks identified in late 2025, when high accident rates and fatalities were recorded during dark hours. Specifically, data from the final quarter of 2025 showed that during dark periods—between 5:00–7:00 and 17:00–21:00—Bavaria recorded 24,493 accidents, resulting in 3,637 injuries and 35 deaths. To support motorists, Bavarian workshops may provide immediate, free repairs for minor lighting defects during the annual light test period. Safety concerns are further heightened by autumn weather conditions, including increased rain and frequent fog. Fog is expected to be most prevalent in the early morning hours, particularly in low-lying areas, as dropping temperatures and high moisture levels cause water vapor to condense.
