Germany is implementing the Automatic Safety Alert (ASA) service, branded as ‘ASA DE’, to enhance national disaster preparedness. The system utilizes the DAB+ digital radio network to broadcast emergency notifications, providing a critical alternative when mobile networks, internet services, or cell broadcasts fail. Managed by Media Broadcast, the system receives alerts from the federal Modular Warning System (MoWaS) and converts them from text to speech. A primary technical feature is the ability to automatically wake compatible digital radios from standby mode to deliver urgent information. Over 35 radio models have already received ASA certification. The nationwide warning channel, ASA DE, officially launched on September 3 on the first federal DAB+ multiplex in channel 5C. Compatible devices are designed to automatically switch to this channel. To utilize this feature for the national warning day on September 10, users with ASA-compatible hardware must manually configure their devices. This process requires entering a 12-digit area code obtained from the official ASA website, selecting the DR Deutschland (5C) transmission channel, and activating the ASA DE service. Digitalradio Deutschland e. V. continues to provide assistance through an information portal featuring setup instructions and video demonstrations. As the ecosystem expands, manufacturers are integrating the technology into new consumer hardware. Albrecht recently expanded its comfort radio range with the DR 863 and DR 864 models. Both new devices support DAB+ and include the ‘ASA warning function’ to provide targeted regional security notifications.
