Germany and Austria continue to intensify migration and deportation measures. In Germany, state-executed deportations fell by 18.2 percent in the first half of 2026, with nearly 9,000 planned removals failing. Conversely, voluntary departures are increasing, with 17,892 individuals leaving the country, including 9,300 who utilized federal financial assistance. Asylum applications across the EU, Switzerland, and Norway (EU+) have continued to decline. In July 2026, first-time applications across the EU fell by 39 percent compared to the same month the previous year, with 34,145 individuals submitting requests. France remains the primary destination with 9,000 applications in July, followed by Italy (5,140), Greece (3,715), Spain (3,590), and Germany (3,075). These five nations accounted for approximately 72 percent of all first-time applications in the EU. While total numbers have fallen, Slovenia recorded the highest rate of new asylum seekers per 100,000 inhabitants at 114.7. Austria reported a significant decline, with 7,397 applications filed during the first three quarters of 2026, a 45 percent drop from the previous year. This may represent the country’s lowest number of applications in decades. In the Netherlands, first-time asylum applications fell by 13 percent in the third quarter of 2026, partly due to a drop in applicants from Eritrea and Syria, though arrivals from Ukraine increased. This period followed the June implementation of the new EU migration pact. In Germany, October 2026 saw the lowest number of new asylum applications for that month in 15 years, with 5,707 registrations. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt attributed this to tightened migration policies and increased border controls implemented since May 2025. In response to migration pressures, EU leaders have called on the European Commission to present tightened migration proposals by the December summit to better protect external borders against geopolitical pressure. During a Brussels summit, tensions surfaced as Denmark, Italy, and Poland criticized Spain for granting residency to illegal migrants, while Italy faced criticism for refusing to accept asylum seekers arriving via Italian territory.
