Germany disease burden analysis

Data released by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) regarding the disease burden in Germany provides insights into mortality and disability factors across the population.

Initial findings highlighted that pain is a leading factor in lost years of life and identified sepsis as a critical medical emergency, noting that approximately 140,000 Germans die from the condition annually. Subsequent evaluations covering 2017 to 2022 identified coronary heart disease (CHD) as the leading cause of years of life lost due to premature death, affecting approximately 4.6 million people. In terms of years lived with disability, back pain remains the most prevalent condition, followed by headaches, anxiety disorders, diabetes, and depression.

According to the ‘German Heart Report – Update 2026’, recent data indicates a decline in mortality rates from CHD, with the death rate falling by more than seven percent per 100,000 inhabitants within one year, dropping from 127.3 to 118.3. Thomas Voigtländer, chairman of the German Heart Foundation, attributes this progress to advancements in medical diagnostics, therapies such as stent procedures and bypass surgery, and improved emergency response chains.

Despite this decline, the RKI notes that CHD continues to impose a significant burden, with over 4.6 million people affected and more than 550,000 annual hospital admissions. While mortality is decreasing, hospital admission rates for heart-related issues are rising, particularly among the elderly; admissions for those aged 75 to 85 have increased by 13.3% since 2012. Additionally, atrial fibrillation remains a major concern, affecting approximately 1.6 million people and accounting for nearly 78% of deaths related to heart rhythm disorders. Experts emphasize that increased prevention targeting risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity remains necessary.
