Germany has formally committed to an explicit phaseout of fossil fuels, including coal, oil, and natural gas, by 2045. Presented by Environment Minister Carsten Schneider, the roadmap marks a shift from general carbon neutrality goals toward specific timelines for abandoning fossil fuels. Key objectives for 2030 include increasing the renewable energy share in the electricity mix from 55% to 80%. To reach this, the government intends to add 12 GW of onshore wind capacity and 215 GW of solar capacity, while also targeting a 30% reduction in methane emissions. The strategy further envisions that all new passenger vehicle registrations will be battery-electric by 2035. The transition is framed as a measure for national security and economic stability to reduce reliance on energy imports. While the roadmap reaffirms the current 2038 coal phase-out timeline, the government is considering accelerating this to 2035. Despite As the formal commitment, transition progresses, the plan government is focusing on hydrogen-ready power plants to ensure supply security. Sector-specific shifts are emerging; in the heating sector, heat pump sales exceeded gas central heating systems for the first time in 2025, and battery electric vehicles accounted for approximately 32% of new passenger car registrations in August 2026. However, the roadmap faces criticism. both political and legal challenges. While some activists acknowledge the importance of an explicit exit, others, such as Andreas Sieber of 350.org, have criticized the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy for continuing to push for expanded gas usage, arguing such moves undermine usage. Additionally, the transition. government faces significant legal pressure via the ‘Zukunftsklage’ (Future Complaint), a constitutional complaint filed by 54,584 plaintiffs, supported by Greenpeace and Germanwatch, seeking stronger climate protections to safeguard fundamental rights.
