The 2026 mushroom foraging season in Germany has faced uncertainty due to fluctuating weather patterns. In late August, experts in regions such as Pfälzerwald and Amberg noted that while initial growth had appeared, the overall yield remained heavily dependent on September rainfall to compensate for previous extreme droughts that impacted underground mycelium networks. By mid-September, the season had officially begun in Niedersachsen. While recent temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, alongside rain and thunderstorms, created favorable local conditions, experts cautioned that the year might not be exceptional. Rita Lüder of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mykologie noted that previous drought periods have significantly impacted soil mycelium, potentially limiting total yields. Foragers in Niedersachsen can find porcini, birch mushrooms, and bay boletes in various regions, though collecting remains prohibited within the Lüneburger Heide nature reserve. In Saxony-Anhalt, the season is active in areas including the Harz, Fläming, and Dübener Heide. Martin Groß, chairman of the Saxony-Anhalt Mushroom Experts Association, stated that while a dry summer initially hindered growth, recent rainfall provides hope for a productive September and October. In North Rhine-Westphalia, recent rainfall is expected to trigger a significant growth spurt for edible mushrooms following the prolonged drought. Daniel Frank of the German Society for Mycology notes that moist soil should allow for a decent harvest of boletes, porcini, and saffron milk caps. However, the drought has had varied effects; expert Dave Cieslik reports that while some edible varieties have seen reduced numbers, parasitic mushrooms such as cauliflower fungus on pines and clathrus on oaks have experienced a particularly successful year. In Bavaria, recent rainfall offers hope following a difficult start to the autumn caused by a hot, dry summer. Christine Margraf of Bund Naturschutz noted that if rain penetrates deep into the soil, new fruiting bodies may emerge.
