Germany is advancing its energy transition with the goal of having renewable sources account for nearly 88% of installed capacity by 2035. This shift is expected to be driven by solar photovoltaics, onshore wind, and offshore wind energy, despite a projected rise in electricity demand due to the electrification of transport, heating, and industry. To support this, the country must expand high-voltage infrastructure to connect northern wind farms to southern industrial hubs. On a local and residential level, the transition is manifesting through new technologies and educational initiatives. New regulations are facilitating the use of domestic micro-wind turbines to supplement solar power. Additionally, the market for residential energy storage is expanding with plug-and-play battery and inverter solutions designed for easy installation. Efforts to promote electromobility are also underway, including community information sessions regarding electric vehicle charging infrastructure and subsidies. Recent data indicates a significant shift in the national electricity market. In the first half of 2026, renewables accounted for 59.1 percent of net feed-in. As a result of this high share of renewable energy, Germany’s electricity import surplus has decreased significantly compared to previous years.
