Germany’s transition toward cashless payments continues to evolve. A Bundesbank review confirmed cash’s share fell to 45% in 2025, while cashless methods reached 55%. While cash remains a frequent individual method, its long-term share has declined steadily from 83% in 2008. Digital methods are rising: debit cards accounted for 26% of transactions, and mobile payments reached 10% in the same period. In the e-commerce sector, digital wallets accounted for 52% of German transaction value in 2025, with Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) at 18% and Account-to-Account (A2A) at 15%. Across the eurozone, an ECB survey of over 8,200 firms found merchant acceptance of mobile payments, such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, rose from 36% in 2024 to 68% in 2026. Conversely, cash acceptance in physical retail locations like hotels and restaurants saw a slight increase to 92% in 2026. New developments include the preparation for a digital euro, with the ECB planning a pilot program in the second half of 2027. To reduce dependence on non-EU providers, the digital euro may include holding limits in e-wallets. In the private sector, the European bank-backed wallet Wero plans to introduce NFC contactless capabilities in autumn 2026. Regulatory shifts are also approaching; under EU Regulation 2024/1624, new anti-money laundering rules effective July 10, 2027, will require identity verification for occasional cash payments of 3,000 euros or more. To address the persistence of “cash only” ‘cash only’ practices, the German Federal Ministry of Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has proposed a introduced plans to mandate for that businesses in the retail, gastronomy, and service sectors to accept offer at least one digital payments payment option by 2027.
