The low-water crisis on the Rhine has reached critical extremes. At the Kaub gauging station, water levels reached 16 cm on August 10, 2026, with forecasts suggesting they may drop into single digits. This threatens to split the waterway into disconnected, non-navigable sections, prompting the Federal Association of German Inland Waterway Transport (BDB) to warn of a total halt to commercial cargo, cruise, and day-trip operations. Economic impacts are widespread. The chemical company Covestro has reported production restrictions, and the Kaub ferry service has suspended operations. In the construction sector, reduced river capacity is driving up costs for essential materials like sand and gravel. Logistical challenges in transporting petroleum products from Rotterdam have also contributed to higher fuel prices in German states including North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate. By mid-August, the situation intensified as the water level at Düsseldorf hit a historic low of minus four centimeters. As of August 17, water levels at Kaub dropped to a record low of six centimeters. The drought has forced cargo barges to drastically reduce loads; in some sectors, average capacity has plummeted from 1,500 tonnes to just 400 tonnes, while grain shipments operate at only 10 percent capacity. To mitigate supply chain disruptions, North Rhine-Westphalia has extended the suspension of the Sunday truck driving ban until September 30. By late August, the crisis escalated further. At Kaub, water levels dropped to 21 centimeters, the lowest recorded since measurements began in 1880. This has caused shipping rates toward Karlsruhe to surge from approximately 45 euros to 215 euros per ton. Additionally, receding shorelines on the Rhine and Moselle have exposed significant public safety hazards. By late August and early September, the crisis expanded to include the Danube. Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger announced support measures to shift cargo from water to land routes.
