Germany‑Austria heatwave intensifies

Entities: Olaf · German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst) · Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) · Germany · Left Party (Germany)

Overview

Mid‑July 2026 saw a sharp intensification of the heatwave across Germany and Austria. The high‑pressure ridge “Olaf” arrived from the southwest on 25 July, driving nationwide temperatures above 30 °C and pushing many areas past 35 °C, with peak readings of 37 °C along the Rhine and forecasts of 40 °C later in the week. Nighttime cooling remained weak, with urban lows around 20 °C, limiting natural ventilation and raising heat‑stress risk.

The Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD) issued storm warnings for Bavaria, noting gusts of 65–75 km/h, possible falling branches and an increased chance of thunderstorms, while isolated thunderstorms and heavy rain were forecast for northern and eastern Germany overnight.

In response, Germany’s Left party presented a five‑point heat‑protection plan. Measures include short‑time work allowances for outdoor workers, mandatory heat safeguards for indoor workplaces, the establishment of cooling centres, expanded free swimming facilities, and upgrades to housing for vulnerable groups.

The DWD warned that the prolonged heat could strain health services and increase wildfire risk. Forecasts continued to predict daytime temperatures above 30 °C for Brandenburg, Berlin, Vorarlberg and parts of Switzerland, with occasional showers.
