Ghana Ambulance Service operational challenges
Overview
The Ghana Ambulance Service is facing scrutiny regarding its operational capacity and equipment reliability. Reports have highlighted critical failures during emergency medical procedures, including an incident where oxygen tubing repeatedly failed during an ICU referral and crews lacked essential medications like adrenaline.
In response to investigations into grounded vehicles, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) stated that many of its 307 Mercedes-Benz ambulances are not abandoned but are undergoing repairs due to high utilization, difficult terrain, and accidents. The NAS noted that some vehicles require specialized spare parts and extensive work. To mitigate downtime, the service is working with the Ministry of Health to expedite spare part procurement and establish regional maintenance centers. Despite these challenges, the NAS maintains that it remains operational across all 16 regions.
