The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) requested that the Ghana Police Service investigate and prosecute boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, known as ‘Ayitey Powers’, following allegations that he made death threats against Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), via social media. The GBIMC described the alleged actions as “criminal and cowardly” and initiated disciplinary proceedings against the boxer. On August 24, 2026, the Accra Regional Police Command arrested Okai after a video circulated on social media in which he purportedly threatened to kill the NSA Director-General. Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng confirmed the arrest, noting that Okai is in custody and cooperating with investigators. Authorities are currently working to establish the circumstances surrounding the video. On August 27, 2026, the Dansoman Circuit Court remanded Okai for one week as he faces charges of threat of death. Prosecutors stated that the video, which the Greater Accra Regional Police Command intercepted on August 18, 2026, featured Okai saying, “You, Yaw Ampofo, I will shoot you with a gun.” During court proceedings, it was noted that Okai admitted to making the statement in his caution statement, claiming the remarks were made out of anger. Okai has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to return to court on September 2, 2026.
