Ghanaian digital literacy efforts have expanded through diverse programs targeting different demographics. Under the African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI), a partnership between the Government of Ghana and the International Telecommunication Union, 150 women from the Ashanti, Central, and Western Regions completed training in programming, cybersecurity, and digital marketing to support businesses in the informal economy. Concurrently, the government is restructuring its ‘One Million Coders’ programme. Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Sam Nartey George announced a strategic shift to prioritize third- and fourth-year university students over freshmen. This change aims freshmen to reduce the time lag between skill acquisition and workforce entry. To support this initiative, this, the government is providing additional laptops to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to facilitate the establishment of 15 learning centres. The total number of laptops provided to KNUST has reached 2,500. The programme, launched by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to train one million Ghanaians over four years and has reached 130 centres across all 16 regions. Recent expansions include a new community ICT centre in Kwesimintsim, inaugurated by Member of Parliament Philip Fiifi Buckman, which targets over 2,000 local residents for training in coding and artificial intelligence. Minister George has defended the programme’s rigorous curriculum against complaints of difficulty, stating that high-level competence is essential for graduates to secure international remote employment and meet the requirements of employers such as Business Process Outsourcing firms.
