On September 23, 2026, a confrontation occurred at the Accra High Court when officers from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) attempted to arrest Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. The incident took place while the MP was acting as legal counsel for a client. EOCO stated the attempt was a lawful measure due to the MP failing to honor investigation invitations dating back to February 2026, though the operation was aborted to prevent endangering public safety. MP Baffour Awuah disputed these claims, asserting he had already addressed the investigation through his law firm and accusing EOCO leadership of past extortion. He later characterized the encounter as an “attempted state-sponsored kidnapping.” The incident sparked a debate regarding parliamentary immunity and constitutional arrest procedures. The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) condemned the attempted arrest, expressing concern over the conduct of EOCO officers and the reported assault of another lawyer, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwa. Majority Leader James Agalga described the agency’s approach as “unprofessional,” arguing that EOCO should have coordinated through the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. By late September, an Accra High Court issued an arrest warrant for Baffour Awuah following an application by EOCO, which is investigating suspected money laundering, financial loss, and the dissipation of public funds related to SIC Life Savings and Loans Company. Following the warrant, On October 1, 2026, Baffour Awuah reported himself to EOCO on October 1, 2026, and was subsequently arrested for questioning. As part of the probe, EOCO officials conducted inspections at taken into custody. The investigation specifically scrutinizes a reported GH¢2.2 million payment made to his former law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, following a search warrant. Baffour Awuah has denied allegations of receiving a GH¢2.2 million payment as legal fees. While Baffour Awuah and his counsel has questioned counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, maintain the necessity of his overnight detention, transactions were for legitimate legal services, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for his immediate release, alleging political intimidation.
