Ghana security and regional crime prevention efforts
Overview
Ghana has initiated the ‘EU for a Secure Ghana’ project, an EU-backed program aimed at strengthening the nation’s ability to prevent and respond to violent extremism, terrorism, and transnational organized crime, specifically targeting the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons. The project focuses on reinforcing state institutions, improving combat capabilities against organized crime, and empowering local communities and civil society in conflict prevention.
In tandem with these national efforts, regional cooperation has been highlighted through the EU-funded SHIFT project. Representatives from Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo met in Accra to share best practices regarding border management and cross-border crime. This regional initiative emphasizes bilateral and multilateral coordination to improve border security and build resilience within border communities.
