Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA) has been managing various requests for the use of national sports facilities, including a proposal from Asante Kotoko to rent the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for the 2026/27 season and a request from Niger to host Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium. Following renovation work to meet international standards, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially cleared the Accra Sports Stadium for international matches. This certification allows Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, to host qualifying matches for the 2027 AFCON, starting with a scheduled fixture against The Gambia on 29 September. The stadium’s readiness was recently inspected by Sports Minister Kofi Adams and NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah to ensure compliance with CAF requirements. The stadium’s approved status also enables it to serve as a neutral venue; Niger has been cleared to host its home qualifiers there, and Somalia has formally requested permission to use the facility for its matches as well. To maintain these standards, the NSA is conducting ongoing maintenance and renovation work at the Accra Sports Stadium. NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah noted that preserving the facility's standards is a priority, as it is currently Ghana’s only venue approved to host FIFA Category A matches. Ankrah also acknowledged that other sporting facilities across various regions in Ghana require further investment and improvements to meet necessary standards.
