Ghanaian youth empowerment and engagement initiatives
Overview
Ghanaian Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has engaged in a series of initiatives aimed at addressing youth empowerment, employment, and community responsibility.
During the launch of the National Youth Festival 2026, the Minister addressed unemployment and urged young citizens to maintain confidence. He proposed an ‘Adopt a Drain’ campaign to mitigate flooding, noting that recent floods resulted in approximately 17 deaths. He emphasized that desilting drains is a shared responsibility between the government and the youth.
At the subsequent National Youth Forum in Accra, the focus shifted toward economic empowerment and policy engagement. Opare Addo pledged to use youth-led ideas to shape national policy in sectors such as health and education. To improve employment outcomes, he encouraged National Service personnel to seek postings in the private sector, citing faster job placement rates compared to government agencies. To support this transition, the Ministry and the Youth Employment Agency are preparing to launch the GRICS programme to deploy personnel to private-sector organizations.
