Gianfranco Zola's role in Italian football

In early July 2026, former Italy striker Gianfranco Zola publicly urged greater financial and institutional support for clubs competing in Italy’s Lega Pro, highlighting concerns for the lower tiers of the domestic game.

In August 2026 the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) appointed Zola as supervisor of the national youth teams, a role that places him alongside technical coordinator Maurizio Viscidi and links the youth sector more closely to the senior A team, while he retains his vice‑presidency in Lega Pro.

On 4 August 2026 FIGC president Giovanni Malagò, together with Club Italia president Claudio Ranieri, announced Zola’s appointment as coordinator of the youth‑national‑team projects within Club Italia. The position is part of a broader restructuring that also includes head coach Roberto Mancini and technical director Ranieri, and it keeps Zola working with Viscidi while he continues as Lega Pro vice‑president under Matteo Marani.
