Girocard usage and expansion in Germany

Overview

The German debit card system, Girocard, experienced significant growth in usage and infrastructure during the first half of 2026. The number of available payment terminals increased by 11.1 percent compared to 2025, reaching 1,397,000.

Transaction volume reached a record 4.21 billion, a 4.0 percent increase from the previous year, with total turnover rising to 151.9 billion euros. While total revenue saw a slight increase of 0.8 percent, the average transaction value fell to 36.12 euros, indicating a trend toward using the card for smaller, everyday purchases. Contactless payments have become the standard, representing approximately 92 percent of all transactions in June, frequently through smartphones and smartwatches.

By August 2026, reports highlighted a divergence between payment trends and broader economic health. While Girocard usage reached record levels, the German retail sector faced a sharp downturn. Real retail sales in July 2026 dropped by 3.4 percent compared to the previous month, marking the sharpest decline since July 2021 and contradicting economist forecasts of a 0.4 percent increase.

This slump was particularly pronounced in petrol station sales, which fell 9.1 percent following the expiration of fuel discounts, and in online retail, which saw a 5.6 percent decrease. The Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE) noted that consumption levels had returned to those seen during the second COVID-19 lockdown. Beyond retail, the furniture industry reported a 2.7 percent revenue decline for the first half of 2026, and the discount chain Groschen Markt entered insolvency proceedings. Overall consumer sentiment remains pressured by inflation and high energy prices. To better compete with international providers, the Girocard system is still planned to expand its utility to include services such as car rentals and hotel bookings starting in the spring of 2027.
