Gironde wildfires in France – health & travel alerts

Following the late‑July blaze that burned roughly 115,000 ha across Gironde and the neighbouring Landes, French health authorities confirmed that smoke laden with fine PM2.5, PM10 and carbon monoxide created hazardous air quality. The ANSES urged residents to stay indoors, seal doors and windows, and use properly fitted FFP2 masks; about 2.5 million masks are being distributed, though they do not protect against gases. Medical experts warned that the particulates can irritate the respiratory tract and aggravate asthma, COPD and other conditions.

German and French officials widened safety guidance for travelers. The German Foreign Office classified the region at the maximum fire‑danger level, while France issued evacuation notices via the FR‑Alert system. Campers are advised to check fire‑risk information, keep mobile alerts active, consider alternative routes and obey local directives. Satellite monitoring from EFFIS and the German Weather Service continues to track fire conditions.

Cardiologists highlighted added risk for people with pre‑existing cardiovascular disease, noting that inhaled fine particles can trigger arterial inflammation and raise the likelihood of heart attacks or strokes. Vulnerable individuals are urged to limit outdoor exposure, wear masks when outside and improve indoor air quality with HEPA filtration.

Despite the health warnings, tourism representatives in Gironde and Landes have appealed for visitors to keep the summer season alive. Union leaders Tjeri Marks, Giom Gria and Lionel Pijad stressed that most camps are reopened, safe swimming and walking areas remain available, and that a continued flow of tourists supports local businesses. The French tourism minister, Serge Papen, is being consulted on possible deferral of financial obligations for affected operators, while road closures and a prefect’s travel advisory continue to shape visitor plans.
