The Andean region is facing increased natural disaster risks due to significant glacial retreat. In Peru, the National Institute for Research on Glaciers and Mountain Ecosystems (Inaigem) reported a 60% loss in glacial surface area, identifying 58 glacial lagoons at very high risk of overflowing. Additionally, in Peru’s Áncash region, Ingemmet issued alerts regarding an active debris flow in the Sisco sector originating from Yanamacha hill, which poses ongoing risks to local populations. As climate change continues to accelerate retreat, glaciologist Lucas Ruiz noted that warming temperatures act as a catalyst that intensifies natural hazards, especially for populations located in valleys below. To address the threat posed by over 500 potentially dangerous glacial lakes, experts are proposing the installation of early warning systems. These proposed technologies include ultrasonic water level sensors, automated weather stations, and high-resolution cameras connected via satellite to provide automated alerts to local civil protection centers.
