Research indicates that surging glaciers—characterized by sudden, significant increases in movement speed—pose a major threat to populated areas. While these glaciers represent only 1% of the global total, they account for nearly one-fifth of the world's glacier area. More than half of these high-risk glaciers are concentrated in High Mountain Asia, including the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalayas, and the Karakoram Range. In the Hindu Kush Himalayas, glacial ice loss has doubled since 2000, increasing the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) for approximately two billion people in South Asia. Retreating glaciers are forming moraine-dammed lakes that become unstable due to rising temperatures, landslides, and ice fragmentation. In Nepal, which contains 2,070 glacial lakes, 21 have been classified as high risk. Similar vulnerabilities exist in the Himalayan regions of China and India. Recent findings from a collaborative study by Systemiq, the Integrated Mountain Initiative, ICIMOD, and the G.B. Pant National Institute for Himalayan Environment show that Himalayan glaciers are now losing mass 65 percent faster than they were a decade ago, pushing the mountain system toward a critical tipping point. This acceleration is creating unstable glacial lakes and thawing permafrost, which destabilizes mountain slopes. In August, a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border resulted in at least 1,300 deaths and left over 5,300 people missing. In India, where the Himalayas account for 18 percent of the land area but 35 percent of natural disasters, authorities have identified 56 glacial lakes as being at ‘very high risk.’ The crisis threatens water security for hundreds of millions, supporting economic activities that contribute to roughly 20 percent of India's GDP. Scientists anticipate a ‘peak water’ event around the middle of the century, after which water availability will decline. Black carbon is estimated to contribute to about one-third of the melting process. Of the estimated 40,000 glaciers in the Himalaya-Karakoram region, only 21 are being continuously and detailedly monitored, complicating hazard detection.
