Overview
Glaciers in the Austrian Alps are experiencing significant retreat and mass loss due to high temperatures and low precipitation.
In the Eastern Alps, the Pasterze Glacier, Austria’s largest, is in a critical state of decline. Following a hot summer in 2026, the glacier is held together by a single, diminishing icefall called the Hufeisenbruch. Scientists note that while mass loss has been continuous since the mid-1800s, the rate of retreat has accelerated since 1980. If the remaining icefall fails, the Pasterze will lose its status as the country’s largest glacier.
Similarly, the Schlatenkees glacier in East Tyrol is undergoing rapid melting, with thick ice layers transforming into meltwater lakes. Data indicates the glacier’s area shrank from 9.1 square kilometers in 1998 to 6.8 square kilometers in 2022, a 25 percent loss. Experts suggest that the disappearance of these glaciers contributes to a feedback loop, as the loss of ice reduces the atmosphere's ability to cool in high mountain regions.
