Irish singer-songwriter and activist Glen Hansard, 56, died on 29 July 2026 after his motorcycle left the road near the Strawberry Beds in Lucan, Dublin, and overturned on a soft verge. Gardaí have ruled out a collision with a tree; a possible heart attack is being considered, with toxicology results pending. An investigation by An Garda Síochána into the circumstances of the accident remains ongoing. Following his death, global tributes were paid by figures including Barack Obama, Bruce Springsteen, and Billie Eilish. A public wake on 3 August 2026 at the Irish Museum of Modern Art attracted over 11,000 visitors. On 4 August, a funeral was held at St Patrick’s Cathedral, attended by thousands in person and over 40,000 via live stream. The service featured Bono, who recited lyrics from ‘Beautiful Day’ and played a voicemail from Patti Smith, and Eddie Vedder, who performed ‘Song of Good Hope’ with Hansard’s longtime collaborator Markéta Irglová. ~~Other attendees included The Edge, Hozier, Steve Coogan,~~ Hansard’s widow, Maire Saaritsa, spoke at the service, honoring his search for ‘truth and ~~Imelda May.~~ beauty.’ Two days after the funeral, Hansard’s final studio record, *All that was East is West of me now*, was released posthumously.
