Global air pollution health crisis

In early June, a United Nations Environment Programme report warned that air pollution kills about 8 million people each year, with 99 % of the world's population exposed to particulate matter above safe limits. The UN linked fine‑particle exposure to damage to lungs, heart and the nervous system and identified fossil‑fuel combustion, transport, industry, agriculture and residential biomass burning as major sources. The report highlighted the disproportionate burden on low‑income communities and urged coordinated political action worldwide, citing Chile as an example where worsening air quality is aggravating respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

By the end of June, the World Health Organization released data showing that progress in reducing fine particulate matter has stalled since 2020. While earlier declines had been recorded, levels have remained essentially flat, leaving about 6.5 billion people exposed, especially in low‑ and middle‑income countries. The WHO emphasized that 90 % of the health burden falls on poorer nations and called for stronger multilateral monitoring, alignment of national standards with WHO guidelines, and multisector collaboration to secure universal access to clean air.
