Global and Brazilian democratic sentiment trends

Overview

Global research indicates a growing skepticism regarding the impact of social media on democracy. A Pew Research Center study across 37 countries found that while the median view remains positive, skepticism is rising, particularly in the United States where 64% of adults believe social media is “detrimental to the democratic system”. In contrast, only 29% of Brazilians believe social media is harmful to democracy, with many viewing digital tools as contributors to democratic strengthening.

In Brazil, domestic polling shows high levels of support for the democratic system. A Datafolha poll indicates that 73% of Brazilian voters believe democracy is “always the best form of government”, a four-percentage-point increase from late 2024. This support is consistent across different political factions, with 76% of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva supporters and 74% of Flávio Bolsonaro supporters favoring democracy. However, general national optimism has declined, falling from 43% to 35%, while pessimism has risen to 43%.
