Global and European soil degradation crisis
Overview
Reports indicate a growing crisis regarding soil health, affecting both regional and global scales. In the European Union, the European Commission has noted that approximately 70 percent of soils are considered unhealthy. This degradation results in the loss of nearly one billion tons of soil annually, causing economic damages to agriculture exceeding 50 billion euros per year and threatening food security and climate stability.
On a global scale, a United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report warns that more than half of the world’s soils are in poor condition.
