Global and regional child marriage trends

Overview

On the International Day of the Girl Child, UN agencies including UNICEF, UNFPA, and UN Women issued warnings regarding the global child marriage crisis. Approximately one in five girls worldwide are married before age 18, affecting an estimated 650 million women and girls currently alive. With over 12 million girls married annually—roughly one every three seconds—the practice is linked to gender-based violence, reduced economic participation, and pregnancy complications, which remain a leading cause of death for girls aged 15-19.

Sub-Saharan Africa maintains the highest prevalence at 31%. While targeted investments in education and legal reforms have averted an estimated 68 million child marriages over the last 25 years, agencies emphasize that progress requires continued efforts to keep girls in school and challenge harmful cultural norms.

In India, experts noted on International Girl Child Day that while national rates have declined from over 50 percent in 1996 to approximately 20 percent, significant regional and rural-urban disparities persist. More than half of the country’s child marriages occur in five states: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, whereas regions like Kerala and Lakshadweep have shown significant progress. UNICEF India Representative Cynthia McCarfrey stated that the current focus, ‘End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights’, necessitates sustained investment in adolescent girls' education, health, and skill development to ensure they can access economic opportunities and participate in decision-making.
