Overview

Global and regional HIV data indicate ongoing challenges in infection rates and treatment access. A 2026 UNAIDS report regarding 2025 statistics estimated that 1.2 million people acquired HIV and 570,000 died from AIDS-related causes globally. In Kampala, Uganda, a study by the Kampala Capital City Authority reported an average of 211 new HIV infections per week for the year ending in June 2026. The data showed that women accounted for 62% of new positive cases, while the highest concentration of new cases was found in the 30-to-39 age group. Health experts cited factors such as unregulated sexual activity, structural inequalities, and high population mobility as drivers for continued transmission.
