The threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to expand across clinical and environmental sectors. Recent data indicates that in 2019, approximately 1.27 million deaths were directly attributable to bacterial resistance, with nearly 5 million associated deaths; projections suggest direct annual deaths could reach 1.91 million by 2050.
In clinical settings, hospitals report the rapid spread of drug-resistant infections in intensive-care units, specifically involving carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. This follows previous findings that resistance is rising globally, particularly among infants and children in low-resource settings.
The crisis extends to the food supply. A systematic review of 749 prevalence surveys from Asian aquaculture between 2000 and 2019 found that 33% of farmed aquatic animals carry multi-drug-resistant bacteria, with hotspots in China, India, and Indonesia, raising concerns about transmission from food animals to humans.
In response, researchers are developing new therapeutic strategies. At Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, scientists are using a diversity-oriented-clicking (DOC) method to create a library of over 150 antibiotic adjuvants designed to restore the effectiveness of existing drugs. Other emerging medical innovations include engineered bacteriophages, CRISPR systems, antimicrobial peptides, and the use of artificial intelligence to design new molecules to neutralize resistant pathogens while protecting the beneficial microbiome.
