Global aviation and tourism infrastructure development

Aviation and tourism leaders at industry events such as the Arabian Travel Market 2026 and the Akwaaba African Travel Market are advocating for increased infrastructure investment to support regional growth and connectivity.

In the Middle East, industry discussions emphasize treating aviation connectivity as “essential national infrastructure.” While passenger demand in the region is moderating following conflict-related disruptions, Dubai is pivoting its long-term focus toward Al Maktoum International, with a massive terminal project valued at approximately Dh128 billion. Additionally, flydubai aims to exceed pre-conflict operating levels by the end of 2026 through significant fleet expansion.

In Africa, stakeholders are focusing on enhancing intra-African travel by reducing airfares, improving transport networks, and easing visa requirements under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). These efforts aim to decrease reliance on international arrivals and promote sectors like medical and sports tourism. However, operational challenges persist in regions like Nigeria, where the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority reported that over 60 percent of domestic flights faced delays or cancellations due to systemic issues, apron congestion, and infrastructure limitations.
