A study published in Global Challenges the journal ‘Global Challenges’ has identified Australia and New Zealand as highly resilient nations capable of surviving global catastrophes, such as nuclear winter, pandemics, or infrastructure failure. Initial findings highlighted Led by Florian Ulrich Jen from the University of Hagen in Germany, the research categorizes threats into three groups: events that block sunlight (such as nuclear winter or volcanic eruptions), events that destroy global infrastructure (such as geomagnetic storms or cyberattacks), and biological hazards. Researchers noted that the primary cause of mass suffering would likely be secondary effects, including the collapse of trade networks, agricultural failure, and mass famine. Australia was identified as the most resilient nation due to its island geography, food production, mineral resources, and stable governance. The study highlights that the Southern Hemisphere holds specific advantages, including fewer active volcanoes and large ocean areas that act as natural climate buffers. While high-latitude Northern Hemisphere regions like Canada face extreme risks from sunlight reduction, Australia’s southern hemisphere location and agricultural capacity provide significant advantages. However, researchers noted Australia remains vulnerable to supply chain disruptions and its military alliance with the United States. New Zealand was also identified as a top candidate for survival, excelling in food self-sufficiency and extreme isolation, though it faces limitations regarding its industrial base and trade reliance. Other highly resilient nations meeting various resilience criteria identified in the study include Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Switzerland, and Argentina. other wealthy nations with strong domestic industries that are not heavily dependent on imports.
