The Vatican’s Fides news agency released the 2026 Church Statistics report, indicating that the global Catholic population has risen to 1.422 billion, an increase of 16.69 million from the previous year. This growth means Catholics now represent approximately 17.8% of the world's population. Growth was recorded on every continent. Africa saw the largest increase with 7.58 million new followers, followed by the Americas with nearly 7 million. Notably, Africa has surpassed Europe in total Catholic numbers, with 288.31 million faithful compared to Europe's 287.24 million. The Americas remains the region with the highest total number of Catholics at 678.87 million. For the first time in five years, the total number of priests has increased, rising by 425 to a total of 407,421. This rise was driven by increases in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, which offset declines in Europe and Oceania. Specifically, Africa recorded 1,676 new priests, Asia added 1,065, and the Americas saw an increase of 199. Detailed data shows the increase was driven by diocesan priests, who rose to 279,238, while the number of priests from religious orders fell by 71 to 128,183. Despite the rise in clergy, the ratio of Catholics per priest increased to 3,491. Conversely, the number of religious sisters and major seminarians continues to decline globally. The number of nuns fell by 9,292 to 580,131, while the number of seminarians decreased by approximately 2,900 to 103,604. Africa remains the only continent to report increases in both religious sisters and major seminarians.
