Reports from international organizations indicate a rise in global religious persecution against Christians. International Christian Concern identified several drivers of this trend, including “religious nationalism” in countries such as India and Myanmar, “transnational repression” by China against unregistered groups, and terrorism in nations like Nigeria, Niger, Mali, and Somalia. Following these findings, Open Doors reported at a conference in Ljubljana that more than 388 million Christians—approximately one in seven globally—face persecution or discrimination. The organization noted that 5,000 Christians were killed in the previous year, with particularly high mortality rates in Africa, where an average of 12 Christians die daily. Persecution methods range from registration restrictions to threats of death. In response to these testimonies, European MEP Matej Tonin suggested the European Union could utilize economic pressure and trade agreements to combat religious discrimination. Expanding on these challenges, the 2026 Bible Access List from the Bible Access Initiative—a joint effort by Open Doors International and Digital Bible Society—reports that over 500 million Christians face restrictions in accessing the Bible. Examining 106 countries, the report identifies barriers including government hostility, persecution, and socioeconomic factors like high illiteracy. The initiative categorizes Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, North Korea, Eritrea, and Mauritania as having “maximum restrictions,” while Turkmenistan, Libya, Sudan, and Iran face “extreme restrictions.” Nations such as China, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan are noted for “severe restrictions.” The report warns that these legal and printing obstacles are creating a “modern famine” of scripture access.
