Global copper markets have transitioned from a period of acute supply stress to a state of volatility characterized by shifting surplus forecasts and geopolitical influences. Initially, the market faced a significant supply squeeze driven by a shortage of copper concentrate. This scarcity forced smelters and fabricators to rely more heavily on recycled scrap, while a decline in exploration funding threatened future primary supply. During this period, the shortage was severe enough to cause negative treatment charges as smelters competed for available material. More recently, market dynamics have shifted toward volatility. While forecasts for 2026 were adjusted from a 150 kt deficit to a 96 kt surplus, copper prices have remained high, trading above $10,500/t. This pricing, influenced by tariff-related distortions, has suppressed downstream buying and caused off-exchange inventories to fall below levels seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analysts suggest that while Recent uncertainty regarding potential United States tariffs have caused market stalls, downstream consumers on refined copper is further impacting global supply chains. The US is considering a phased approach, which could include a 15 percent tariff in 2027, increasing to 30 percent in 2028. This policy ambiguity has driven cathode premiums in China to their highest levels since October 2023 as Asian reserves decrease while US inventories rise. Traders may eventually be forced move copper into US exchange warehouses and customs-monitored facilities to absorb high prices, capitalize on price differentials between COMEX and the London Metal Exchange (LME), potentially sustaining demand. creating strategic copper reserves funded by private traders.
