Global digital fraud and phishing scams

Overview

Cybersecurity experts and authorities have issued warnings regarding various digital fraud and phishing methods used to steal personal and financial information.

Initial alerts identified malicious VPN applications, such as MaskVPN and ShineVPN, which can transform mobile devices into proxy servers to intercept banking details and passwords. Additionally, reports emerged from Spain concerning WhatsApp scams where criminals impersonate victims to solicit money from acquaintances via bank transfers.

Subsequent reports highlighted a sophisticated phishing campaign targeting university students and their parents. In these instances, scammers use stolen personal data to pose as officials from police or social insurance agencies. Victims are pressured to resolve purported health insurance issues via messaging apps, where they are then directed to download fraudulent applications designed to mimic official government and service portals.
