Global digital out-of-home advertising evolution
Overview
The digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising sector is experiencing global growth and technological evolution. Industry discussions at the 20th OOH Advertising Convention in India highlighted how the medium is increasingly using data-driven creativity and improved measurement to capture digital advertising budgets. In New Zealand, programmatic digital billboards have come to account for over 80% of the country’s OOH spend.
Recent research into the medium’s effectiveness suggests that DOOH is transitioning from static formats to dynamic, real-time content. A study conducted in Sydney by media company QMS, in partnership with attention measurement firm Amplified, highlights the commercial effectiveness of this medium. Analyzing pedestrian and vehicular traffic, the research suggests that DOOH can drive sales and brand memory with significantly less active attention than traditional digital channels. While standard digital channels often require a 2.5-second active attention threshold, the study found that DOOH triggers positive outcomes at approximately 1.0 active second.
The research, which utilized biometric data, noted that DOOH assets provide substantial attention footprints, averaging 24.2 seconds for street furniture and 13.9 seconds for large-format roadside billboards. This suggests the medium can leverage passive attention to build long-term brand equity while driving immediate sales uplift.
Furthermore, the DOOH segment is seeing growth as advertisers increasingly treat digital outdoor media as video advertising, often utilizing ten-second spots similar to television. Research indicates that digital outdoor advertising is perceived as more credible, natural, and non-intrusive by audiences, including younger demographics, compared to social media advertising. The development of digital networks has also enabled programmatic purchasing, allowing for more unified buying methods.
