Global ecosystem restoration and food security efforts
Overview
The United Nations has issued warnings regarding a “narrowing window” to restore global forests, which are essential for climate resilience and food security. A report from the Food and Agriculture Organization noted that while global initiatives aim to restore over 1 billion hectares of land, only about one fifth of that goal has been met. Since 1990, more than 489 million hectares of forest have been cleared, and ecosystems face increasing threats from fires, insects, and extreme weather.
By late October, data released during the COP17 biodiversity conference in Armenia indicated that 252 million hectares of degraded ecosystems are currently undergoing restoration across 149 countries. This effort has reportedly created over one million green jobs. However, experts maintain that current progress is insufficient to meet the 2030 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework targets. To reach these goals, the UN stated that annual global restoration financing must increase more than fourfold, from 64 billion dollars to 296 billion dollars by 2030.
A new United Nations report, “Nature’s Comeback: Scaling Ecosystem Restoration for People and Planet,” confirms that while restoration has reached a record 252 million hectares, progress remains insufficient. The assessment, published by the FAO, UNEP, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, notes that current efforts cover approximately 34% of the 1 billion hectare goal. While terrestrial restoration is approaching half of its target, progress in marine, coastal, and freshwater ecosystems lags significantly behind. China leads terrestrial efforts with 127.4 million hectares, followed by Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. Expanding these programs could potentially create up to 32 million additional green jobs by 2030.
