In observance of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, global and regional efforts are being highlighted to address food security and waste reduction. On a global scale, organizations such as the World Packaging Organisation and the Australasian Institute of Packaging are promoting innovative packaging to extend shelf life. In the European Union, annual food waste is estimated at nearly 59 million tons, valued at approximately 132 billion euros. Efforts are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which seeks to halve per capita global food waste at retail and consumer levels by 2030. The United Nations, marking the day on September 29, emphasizes the ‘transformative potential of reducing food loss and waste.’ According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 13% of food produced is lost after harvest before reaching the market, while 19% of food available to consumers is wasted within trade, food services, and households. The UN calls for collaborative action to improve planning, storage, and conservation. In Italy, specific corporate and regional initiatives continue to address these challenges. Barilla has announced the donation of 4,000 tons of food products and 2 million euros for social causes in 2025 through its partnership with Fondazione Banco Alimentare. This includes supporting initiatives such as ‘Biscotti della Felicità’ for Dynamo Camp and ‘Biscotti Senza Frontiere’ for Médecins Sans Frontières. Regional reports show mixed results. While Cia-Agricoltori Italiani noted an 11.2% drop in domestic food waste, they warned that fresh produce remains highly affected. In Rome, ACLI inaugurated the ‘Dispensa Solidale’ to recover food surpluses and provide hygiene and childcare products to families in difficulty. Meanwhile, Banco Alimentare in Pesaro and Urbino collected over 95,000 kg of food in 2025 to assist those impacted by inflation. In Puglia, Coldiretti Puglia continues to highlight that 14.8% of local families face food poverty risks, emphasizing the need for better supply chain preservation.
