Global ground-level ozone pollution levels

Overview

Reports from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) indicate that dangerous levels of ground-level ozone exposed nearly 40 percent of the global population during the first eight months of 2026. This pollution is driven by a combination of human-caused emissions, wildfires, and extreme heatwaves, which facilitate chemical reactions between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds.

Regional impacts were significant: Asia was the most heavily affected, with approximately 60 percent of its population experiencing extremely high concentrations. In North America, two-thirds of the population faced poor or very poor air quality. In Europe, approximately 50 percent of the population was exposed to poor, very poor, or extremely poor air quality, with particular intensity noted in northern Italy and southern regions.

Ground-level ozone poses risks to respiratory and cardiovascular health, as well as ecosystems and crop yields. Experts highlight a feedback loop where climate change-induced heatwaves increase ozone production, while the ozone itself acts as a greenhouse gas, contributing roughly 0.23°C to global warming.
