Global health and economic impacts of lead exposure

Overview

Health experts and international organizations continue to highlight the severe neurotoxic and economic consequences of global lead exposure. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that lead exposure was responsible for more than 3.5 million deaths in 2023, primarily due to cardiovascular effects, and affects hundreds of millions of children.

During International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week in October 2026, the WHO and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued urgent calls to identify and eliminate exposure sources. Experts estimate that up to 815 million children globally are affected, noting there is “no known safe level of blood lead concentration.” In children, exposure causes permanent damage to brain development and learning, while in adults, it is linked to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and kidney damage.

Common sources include lead-based paint, contaminated dust or soil, ceramics, cosmetics, traditional medicines, plumbing fixtures, and industrial activities like battery recycling. Economically, a World Bank study estimated the consequences at 6.9 percent of total global economic output.

As of late 2026, fewer than half of the world's countries have implemented legally binding controls on lead-based paint. In response, the WHO is preparing a global plan and technical package for 2027 and continues to reinforce laboratory capacities in nations such as Brazil, India, Nepal, and several African countries.
